Quebec accounts for almost 70% increase in job vacancies that grow much faster than the employment rate.
Job vacancies in Canada rose sharply to 581,600 in Q2 2019 showing an increase of 6.4% compared with the same period of the previous year.
Compared with Q1 2019, the number of job vacancies in Canada increased by more than 75,000, with Quebec accounting for 34,800 vacancies. Growth was recorded in three more provinces and two territories.
Ontario comes second in terms of job vacancies growth: they were up by 7,400 showing an increase of 3.6% compared with the same period of 2018. Workers in wholesale trade were in the greatest demand.
Other provinces and territories where there was an increase in job vacancies are Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, and Nunavut.
Over the past six quarters, the number of jobs in Canada has steadily exceeded half a million. The rise in job vacancies was observed in six out of 10 major industries.
The growth in Q2 2019 was driven by accommodation and food services, professional, scientific and technical services, as well as by the health care and social assistance. The number of vacancies in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and hunting also increased, reaching the highest level for this sector. In addition, vacancies were up in information and cultural industries, mainly in telecommunications and broadcasting.
