Canada Has Updated the List of Occupations under the Global Talent Stream

New occupations have been added to the list, and those that no longer meet the needs of the Canadian labour market have been removed.

The Government of Canada has updated the list of occupations under the popular Global Talent Stream. This stream provides Canadian employers who are active in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with easier access to the temporary foreign workforce with experience.

Two occupations have been removed from the list: engineering managers (NOC 0211) and architecture and science managers (NOC 0212). Applications for occupations removed from the list will be accepted until August 4, 2019. The only new occupation that has been added is computer network technicians (NOC 2281).

According to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), a service responsible for processing applications under the Global Talent Stream, the update was necessary to keep the list reflecting the needs of the Canadian labour market and innovative companies.

The occupations that have been shifted belong to the B category of the Global Talent Stream. The ESDC representatives said that there is an increased demand for specialists in these categories because Canada does not have enough workers with the necessary skills.

Under the Global Talent Stream, foreign workers go through a simplified recruitment procedure, getting a work permit in just two weeks, as employers can submit a simplified labour market impact assessment (LMIA).

This year, the Canadian government celebrated the biennial anniversary of the Global Talent Stream, which helped 24,000 highly skilled foreign workers immigrate to Canada over this period.
